CHRISTIAN EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES

GODLY PLAY — Currently designed for children ages 3-7 (but flexible), Godly Play is a hands-on, interactive class based on the Church Year. It now meets twice each month after church, taught by “Miss Lois,” on the first Sunday (during coffee hour) and third Sunday (during New and Renew).  The classes, which are brief (15 minutes or so), have been a great hit with kids, who discover that faith can indeed be fun!

FIRST HOLY COMMUNION — Holy Communion, along with Baptism, are the two Sacraments by which Christ sustains us with his grace.  Though it is appropriate to commune a child even from infancy, since its efficacy does not depend on our own understanding (as it is a Divine Mystery), the Church has traditionally waited until children have reached an age of seven or eight so they may better appreciate its significance.  Through their participation in the liturgy and Sunday School, children often come to a basic understanding and desire to commune, seemingly on their own.  Parents should take this seriously, and, in consultation with the pastor, may decide their child is ready for First Holy Communion earlier or later, depending on circumstances.  Through meetings with the pastor, and continued participation in church life, parents and children will be provided with the resources they need to prepare for this important event.

CONFIRMATION — Those of confirmation age (13-18) will, with the pastor, set individual learning goals above and beyond Sunday Church School in order to learn about important aspects of faith as set out in Luther’s Small Catechism.  Normally a two-year program, Confirmands are learning to grow into their Baptismal vows as soon-to-be adult members of the Church.  Therefore, regular weekly attendance at worship and Sunday School is expected.  When parents and child believe they are ready to commit to this program, the pastor will help the Confirmand set learning goals and strategies to prepare for Confirmation, which is normally Pentecost Sunday.  Confirmands have the opportunity to take part in Confirmation Camp at Camp Lutherlyn in Prospect, Pa.

MISSION ON THE MON - New in 2011, Mission on the Mon is a week-long summer servant event focusing on social service agencies and those in need in McKeesport. Read more here. Watch for the announcement of the 2012 dates soon!

ADULT SUNDAY CHURCH SCHOOL — If delving more deeply into our weekly Scripture readings appeals to you, Adult SCS is the place.  Through engaging discussion and study, you will be better equipped to apply your Christian faith to life and current events, as well as to “go out and make disciples.”  The class meets year-round, each Sunday at 9:00 A.M.  Special programs are usually offered during the summer, which have included book and film studies.

NEW MEMBERS RETREATS - Offered in Fall and Spring

WOMEN OF THE ELCA — Designed to meet the needs of Christian women, the Women’s Circles engage in Bible studies and confront issues affecting the Church and world.  The Priscilla Circle meets every second Monday at noon, while the Ruth Circle gathers in the evening, every second Monday at 7:30 P.M.

SPECIAL SERIES — Lately these have included Lenten Soup and Discussions, a class on Ignatian Spirituality, and a workshop on prayer.  Watch the newsletter and bulletin for upcoming events.  Please feel free to make suggestions for special classes or series!

PARISH EDUCATION COMMITTEE — This year, the Parish Education Committee itself has committed itself to learning.  Each third Sunday of the month at 6:30 P.M., the committee will be reviewing Sunday School curriculum for the following month to better equip teachers and parents for forming our children in Christian faith. All are welcome to come and join in our studies and discussion.
